Moving With Pets: 4 Tips For Easing Stress

Moving is stressful on humans, so just envision how stressful it must be on pets. Even though they may not show signs of stress, they can become just as stressed as humans—especially when they do not know what is going on. While you cannot eliminate stress altogether, you can minimize the amount of stress and anxiety your pet encounters during the moving process. Here are four tips to help ease the stress on you and your pet during a move:

1. Update Your Pet's Tag and Microchip Information

Tags and microchips are very handy for pets and their owners. If they run off and are found, the tag or microchip will ensure the pet goes to the rightful owner. Microchips can offer great piece of mind. If you are moving, make sure you update the tag and microchip with your new information. Include your new phone number and address. If you do not have that information yet, you can always use the information of a close friend or relative.

2. Obtain Vet Records

If you are moving out of the city or state, make sure you obtain a copy of your pet's vet records. Just give your current vet a call and ask to have them transferred to your new vet, if you have one. If you do not have a new vet yet, get a paper copy of the records. It will save you a lot of time and frustration when it comes time to renew shots.

3. Keep Your Pet Away From the Action

Pets can feel especially vulnerable during a move. Everything they know and love is changing, and they probably do not understand it. To keep your pet calm during the packing and moving process, remove them from the chaos. You should secure them in a comfortable and well-ventilated spot; the bathroom works well. Put their toys, food, water, and a blanket in the room so that they do not get too bored. If you will be using a moving service, make sure the movers know the animal is in that spot so they do not disturb them.

4. Keep Motion Sickness at Bay

Just like humans, cats and dogs can experience motion sickness—and it isn't fun. If you will be driving, make sure you give your animal plenty of water and little food to help fend off nausea. If your pet has experienced motion sickness is the past, talk to your vet about motion sickness medication.

Moving can be a very stressful event on both humans and pets. Use these four tips to make the process easier and less stressful. If you have any questions or concerns about your pet and their health, take them to the vet for a quick check-up before the move. About Me

using self-storage to clear out guest rooms

What do you do when you have too much stuff and not enough space? My husband was constantly picking on me because I had two spare rooms in the house that I could never use as guest rooms because I used them to store the things that I couldn't put elsewhere. When my mother called and said that she and my sister were coming to town, I had to scurry to find something to do with all of those boxes and things in those two rooms. That was when I was introduced to the glorious world of self-storage. Find out all about it right here.
