Tips For Organizing Your Storage Unit

Organizing your storage unit can save you a lot of time and keep things neat and tidy. Here are some critical tips for organizing your storage unit.

Cut Out Handles On Boxes

When organizing your storage unit, you can help prevent the awkward handling of boxes by cutting out handles in the sides of boxes that don't already have handles. Take everything out of the box and break the box down flat on the ground. Take a utility knife and cut a three inch triangle approximately three inches in on the shorter side of each box. Make sure that you pop out the portion in the middle where you cut and then re-assemble the box. Put tape on the seams of the box to add an extra layer of protection and then place everything back inside the box. Repeat the process on the other boxes inside your storage unit until every box has a handle you can grab onto when you carry the box.

Use Blankets to Protect Anything Fragile

Fragile items can get knocked around and can be easily broken if they are left unprotected and loose inside boxes or storage bins. Wrapping fragile items inside a blanket or towel can add another layer of protection that can soften any blows to the box and pad the item if the box is dropped. Make sure that each fragile item is wrapped with a blanket or towel individually and then stored together in a box or bin. Try not to group items together as they will bump up against one another or get banged into the other, which can cause them to crack or break. If you run out of towels, you may be able to buy more at your local dollar store for a modest fee.

Label Everything

One of the best ways to organize your storage unit is to label everything on the side of the box. Buy a set of white stickers and a black marker to allow you to write the contents of each box on the sticker. Peel the sticker off and the apply it to the side of the box. For easier access you can have the same sticker applied to the other side of the box, so that you can see exactly what the contents of each box are by simply glancing at the side.

If you have any questions regarding what you can and cannot store inside a storage unit, then call a local storage vendor like ABC Moving & Storage and consult with a sales person.

About Me

using self-storage to clear out guest rooms

What do you do when you have too much stuff and not enough space? My husband was constantly picking on me because I had two spare rooms in the house that I could never use as guest rooms because I used them to store the things that I couldn't put elsewhere. When my mother called and said that she and my sister were coming to town, I had to scurry to find something to do with all of those boxes and things in those two rooms. That was when I was introduced to the glorious world of self-storage. Find out all about it right here.
