How To Make Moving A Little More Tolerable

Even if you're excited about a move, the moving process is usually difficult. Collecting your possessions and relocating requires lots of planning. If you want to make the process a little more tolerable, though, check out these four recommendations.

Scout

Getting moving vehicles in and out of a neighborhood can be challenging in some places. Even if the streets aren't a problem, you may need to figure out the best way to get things into the house. Also, you're going to need to scout the place you're leaving for all of the same problems, but in reverse.

If you're hiring a moving company, ask what sizes of trucks they offer. Use the measurements to check if a particular vehicle is going to be feasible. If you're unsure, ask the movers. They have experience squeaking trucks into tight spots, and they can usually tell you if a location is going to be tough. Send them pictures, GPS coordinates, and measurements so they can assess the challenges.

Organize the Boxes

It isn't enough to have a bunch of high-quality boxes. You want to have a system. Every box needs a label indicating where it came from and where it's going. Label the box with the contents, too.

Also, add each box to a printed checklist after you tape it shut. List the important items that are in the box. Mark the checklist when a box is sealed, and mark it again when the box gets where it's going. Hit the checklist one more time when you unpack the box. You will do a lot less searching if you can pull up the checklist and track each box to a room and verify its status.

Gather the Essentials

Carry your essentials with you in your vehicle. You don't want to go through a bunch of boxes trying to find your toothbrush on the first day of work in your new place. The same goes for your cell phone, wallet, purse, ID, keys, and other daily needs.

Eliminate

Whenever you can avoid moving something, do so. Identify trash and throw it out. Likewise, identify anything worth donating or selling and find it a new home. Give things to friends and family members, too.

If you're moving a long distance, don't pay professional movers to handle inconsequential items. You don't need to move rolls of paper towels, for example, when you can go to the big box store closest to your new place to buy more.

About Me

using self-storage to clear out guest rooms

What do you do when you have too much stuff and not enough space? My husband was constantly picking on me because I had two spare rooms in the house that I could never use as guest rooms because I used them to store the things that I couldn't put elsewhere. When my mother called and said that she and my sister were coming to town, I had to scurry to find something to do with all of those boxes and things in those two rooms. That was when I was introduced to the glorious world of self-storage. Find out all about it right here.
